ACT Players Named in All-Australian Team
28 July 2010
With the conclusion of the final round of matches of the eleventh Landmark Australian Country Football Carnival in Canberra, tonight’s Closing Ceremony at the Ainslie Football Club saw the naming of the All-Australian Team in which six ACT players were named in the side.

AFL legend and Team GWS Coach, Kevin Sheedy was on hand to present the players with their All-Australian jumper and highlighted the significance country football plays in the AFL, "approximately 50% of players in the AFL are from country football leagues."

ACT Captain, James Kavanagh (Queanbeyan) was named in the half-forward lining following a successful campaign that saw him finish runner-up in the Carnival’s leading goal kicking awards with 12 goals for the Carnival. Kavanagh was also named the All-Australian vice-captain.

Marcus Crook (Ainslie) and Matthew Hearn (Ainslie) were named in the half back line after strong defensive performances for the ACT throughout the country football carnival particularly on Day 1 that saw the ACT win all three of their games.

Ben Hughes (Ainslie) was named in the forward line having had a successful Carnival that saw him finish third in the Leading Goal Kicker Awards for the Carnival with 11 goals.

Having dominated the ruck throughout the Carnival Chad Gibson (Eastlake) was named the All-Australian ruckman as well as being named the ACT’s Player of the Carnival as chosen by the ACT team.

Griffin Underwood (Belconnen) was again named in the All-Australian Team for the second Carnival running. He was named as a rover.

The ACT’s Marcus Crook was also named the J.J Lussick Medallist for Best Player of the Carnival as voted by the umpires. An honour that came as quite a surprise to the unexpecting Crook.

Finishing the Carnival on a high the ACT showed what they are capable of today, downing Queensland by 108-points in what was a devastatingly dominate display of football by the local boys. The ACT defeated Queensland, 25.9 (159) to 8.3 (51).
